EDITORIAL
The integration of Nutrition into the medical school curriculum to train physicians, who can effectively provide nutritional care for the prevention and management of chronic diseases, is a challenge in times of economic constraints.
As more and more citizens, in USA and Europe, are afflicted with chronic diseases in which diet plays a key role, the improvement of clinical skills in what concerns nutrition interventions in the promotion of health and prevention of disease is now seen as a major strategy to reduce costs in health care system.
Physicians are viewed as among the most trusted sources of information on diet and nutrition. This reinforces nutrition training in medical schools and residency programs. This has been identified as an essential component of medical education by numerous organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the National Academy of Sciences, the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
In the last decades, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) has developed important research in nutrition, in general, and metabolism, in particular.
Also under the same scenario of economic restrictions, Portuguese food industry need to develop more scientific evidence allowing to be more competitive. FMUP as a member of PtCRIN (Portuguese Academic Clinical Research Infrastructures Network) will converge efforts with a translational research network to develop innovative projects answering these specific problems.
CINTESIS, as a CRO, can play an important role in delivering clinical-study and clinical-trial support for drugs and/or medical device, thus providing support to the medical community and promoting technology transfer.
