EDITORIAL
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MEDICINE
Artificial Intelligence in Medicine is facing a new challenge, created by the rapid growth in information science and technology in general and the complexity and volume of data in particular. Medical settings are using sensors and networks of health information systems to integrate data from patients, which requires storage, processing and management operators to enable further analysis and knowledge discovery. Medical domains include several settings where data is produced in a streaming fashion, such as anatomical and physiological sensors, or incidence records and health information systems. Decision support, alerting services, ambient intelligence, assisted living and personalization services are just few examples of expected uses of actionable knowledge extracted from medical data streams. All of them are characterized by the high-speed at which huge amounts of data are produced, and often require fast and accurate information retrieval and analysis, that can effectively support clinical decisions.
The 26th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS 2013 - June 20th to 22th) is the premier conference for computational medicine and is able to attract a wide audience, since it covers not only artificial intelligence in Medicine but also other themes such as signal and image processing, decision support in medicine, electronic health records, the areas of health and wellbeing, telemedicine and e-health.
This event is a good example of the outreach activities that have been done since 2011, with researchers affiliated to CINTESIS, in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly in machine learning and medical data streams, and highlights the multidisciplinary effort required for todays’ challenges in Medicine.
