COMPARATIVE USE OF HEALTH CARE TECHNOLOGIES
FOR CORONARY HEART DISEASE

A lack of investment in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease is projected to amount to as much as $47 trillion worldwide over the next 25 years. Even with innovation, different health systems have varying abilities to adopt new health technologies. These differences may be more apparent among countries with contrasting gross domestic products, payment-based health systems, scientific and professional development levels, and population profiles. For example, many of the top drugs, such as clopidogrel and atorvastatin, have just come off patent and fourth generation bioabsorbable stents may be soon widely available.
The Harvard Medical School – Portugal Program in Translational Research and Information and FCT announced funding to compare the use of new coronary heart disease (CHD) treatments between the United States and Portugal. CUTEheart’s research team consists of investigators located in at the Faculty of Medicine of University of Porto’s Center for Research in Health Technologies and Information Systems (CINTESIS) and Department of Health Information and Decision Sciences; the Faculty of Medicine of University of Lisbon’s Institute of Preventive Medicine; and Harvard Medical School’s Department of Health Care Policy. 
Researchers will empirically compare the use of treatments for CHD, the impact of selected CHD treatments on outcomes between the two health care systems, and their associated costs. At CUTEheart we all trust that the project will bring new evidence and methodological insights that can help the design of better health policies and improved care.
