EDITORIAL
BIBLIOMETRICS AND ACADEMIC EVALUATION
The abundance of scientific information generated over the recent years combined with new forms of communication, has led the research community to propose the measure, which has given rise to a new discipline of Bibliometrics. This uses mathematical and statistical analysis methods that allow obtaining reliable indicators related to quality. Thus, it is possible to obtain information on the number of documents issued by an institution or a country, research groups or individuals with the greatest scientific productivity.
Currently, measures such as the Impact Factor (IF) or the Hirsch number (h-index) although controversial, are generally accepted measures of deducing individual and institutional academic merit.
In the recently opened “Investigador FCT” grant, FCT seems to, at least partially, move towards a more metric evaluation of the candidates, by introducing a (optional) field for ResearcherID.
Regardless of using other methods of demonstrating academic quality, CINTESIS researchers are encouraged to create / update their individual ResearcherID, clearly identifying their affiliation. Used in conjunction with other approaches, such as the Degóis Platform, researchers can help disseminate scientific production in a more effective way.
