EDITORIAL
UPCOMING CHALLENGES
The recent public consult on the Evaluation and Funding of Research Units promoted by FCT has set the tone for the latest discussion on funding and stressed the need for research units to re-reorganize themselves. FCT proposes to eliminate the multiannual funding of research units, emphasizing a project-based funding model, mostly oriented towards Horizon 2020 and self-funding capability, mostly based on technology transfer projects. CINTESIS presents itself as an enabler of innovation and change, with impact on medical practices and organization - creating new knowledge, methodologies and products and improved modes of interaction between patients and health professionals - in order to optimize the efficiency and safety of provision of health care.
The unit is constantly updating itself in order to adapt to the challenges created by the new funding framework of Horizon 2020 and accordingly has consolidated its position in the area of Aging. To this end, CINTESIS recently joined the AgeUP networking coalition assuming specific research commitments and promoting cooperation with other research centres. This initiative has highlighted the multidisciplinary scientific expertise within the CINTESIS community and also its determination in undertaking the upcoming societal challenges.
