Welcome to the New CINTESIS!
Yesterday, was closed the first phase of the application towards the creation of the new CINTESIS!
Following FCT recommendations for the 2013 Evaluation and Funding of R&D units – e.g. the need to increase the rationalization and efficiency of the national scientific and technological system – and the main strategic priorities for ERA, as defined in Horizon 2020 programme, the proponents decided to create a new research unit, CINTESIS, Center for Research in Health Technologies and Services, by bringing together three existing R&D units, classified with “Very Good” in 2007 – Center of Experimental Morphology [CME-ID121], Unit for Research and Education on Adults and Elders [UNIFAI-ID688] and the former Center for Research in Health Technologies and Information Systems [CINTESIS-ID753] – and other groups from diagnostic, nursing and nutrition research, into a critical mass of researchers and academic institutions.
This new CINTESIS will integrate health technologies development and assessment research (e.g. ICT and biomaterials) with clinical and health services research, aiming the acceleration of innovation in healthcare across a spectrum of activities that span from knowledge discovery and product design to the delivery of new medical products, devices and services.
Although the unit will find a solid host institution at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, its management and research structures and labs will be mostly decentralized, involving other higher education institutions such as ICBAS, ISEP, ESEP and Universities of Aveiro and Algarve, together with several hospitals and healthcare providers, within a collaborative and synergetic network.
The new CINTESIS will continue to endorse a strategic multidisciplinary vision, in order to better address health and societal challenges, such as the improvement of a cost-effective and safer care and the promotion of active and healthy ageing. In addition, this unit will pave the way to support several existing PhD programs, in the areas of clinical and health services research, medicine, ageing, psychology, nursing, bioethics, and applied maths.
